Condoms & Latex Barriers

How do They Work?
Condoms are thin latex or polyurethane (plastic) barriers that cover the penis during sexual activity. They come in many shapes, sizes, colors and flavors. They also make a female condom, which the woman wears in her vagina during sex. There is only one kind of female condom.

Latex barriers (also called Dental Dams) are a thin piece of latex that provides a layer of protection between a woman’s vulva and her partner’s mouth during oral sex. For oral sex on a man, a male condom should be used.

What to Remember
Condoms should be stored in a cool, dry place like a dresser drawer. They should not be kept in a place that gets warm, like your pocket, wallet or the dashboard of a car. Always check the expiration date before using. When putting the condom on, be sure to pinch the tip before rolling the condom down the penis. Only use water-based lubricants (like KY-Jelly® or Astroglide®), never oil-based (like Baby Oil or Vaseline). Throw the condom away after use; do not reuse. Never use more than one condom at a time.

Where to Get Them
Condoms can be purchased at almost all major grocery and drug stores, as well as specialty stores. You can also get them at the Public Health Department.
