County
As of February 2007, Stanislaus County has had 686 AIDS
patients, 359 of whom have died. In April 2006, Governor
Schwarzenegger signed into law Senate Bill 699, which
requires health care providers and laboratories to report
confirmed cases of HIV infection by name to local health
departments within 7 calendar days. As of April 2006,
there were 214 HIV cases in Stanislaus County. Once
the bill was signed, the number dropped to zero, because
all cases previously reported with a code instead of
a name were deleted.
State
As of November 2006, California has had 144,433 AIDS
patients, 83,212 of whom have died. In April 2006, Governor
Schwarzenegger signed into law Senate Bill 699, which
requires health care providers and laboratories to report
confirmed cases of HIV infection by name to local health
departments within 7 calendar days. The new law also
requires local health departments to report unduplicated
HIV cases using patient names to the California Department
of Health Services. As of April 2006, there were 41,155
HIV cases reported in California. Once the bill was
signed, the number dropped to zero, because all cases
previously reported with a code instead of a name were
deleted. Giving local health jurisdictions time to catch
up, it will be a while until California’s statistics
are accurate on HIV. Current statewide statistics can
be found at http://www.dhs.ca.gov/ps/ooa/Statistics/default.htm.
